Intra-Workout

Branched chained amino acids

Branch chain amino acids are generally referred to as BCAA’s; they are quickly becoming one of the most popular sports supplements. They are a versatile product and are beneficial for those trying to gain muscle and those trying to preserve muscle when on a fat loss plan. I personally think they’re most beneficial when dieting – losing hard earned muscle doesn’t sit well with me!

When we’re dieting down, we’re in a calorie deficit, this can cause the body to become a catabolic state, meaning your body is breaking down (fat AND muscle). BCAAs can help increase protein synthesis which can help to prevent muscle breakdown.

  • Increased protein synthesis

  • Reduced protein breakdown

  • Reduce fatigue during workouts

  • Increased muscle recovery

Glutamine

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid you’ll find in our blood. It’s so abundant it makes up to around 60% of the amino acid pool in our muscles. Although the body can create this amino acid, there are situations the body’s synthesis can be limited – meaning we would need to give it a boost from out diet.

  • Increased muscular recovery

  • Boosted immune system

  • Increased growth hormone

  • Increased protein synthesis

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are involved in many metabolic activities and are essential for proper cell functioning – yes this includes muscle cells!

  • Increased hydration

  • Reduced muscle cramps

Fast acting carbohydrate powder

Dextrose, maltodextrin and branch chain cyclic dextrin are common forms.

There are several different forms of fast acting carbohydrates people take intra workout, but they’re all generally taken for the same purpose. This goal is to maximise training performance. Everyone has heard of the dreaded wall when exercising, you know that feeling when your body wants to give up and you feel like you’ve nothing left to give – carbs intra-workout can help battle this feeling.

When training intensely, your body will use its stored carbs (glycogen) in our muscles. Once we’ve used up our bodies stored energy, the wall is soon upon us. This is where intra-workout carbs come in to play, they help prevent the body running short and help to maintain performance by reducing tiredness and fatigue.

  • Increased performance

  • Reduced mental fatigue

  • Prevent catabolism
