Vitamin C

What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C is known as ascorbic acid, it’s an essential vitamin to the body. It’s water soluble, meaning that the body doesn’t store it and we need a daily dosage of it to maintain healthy levels. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant; these are nutrients that the body uses to help prevent damage from free radicals (by-products of normal metabolic processes or from external sources such as smoking).

Why do we need it?

Vitamin C is important as it aids growth and repair of tissues all over the body. It’s required to form collagen – the protein used to make skin, scar tissues, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels. It also aids in wound healing and helps to maintain the health of our cartilage, bones and teeth. It’s also known to help maintain a healthy blood pressure due to the strengthening effects it has on the walls of our arteries.

We all need Vitamin C, whether you’re a body builder or just somebody trying to get fit and healthy. Vitamin C helps maintain a healthy immune system and can help us recover from intense exercise. Vitamin C can also help the body metabolise protein. It doesn’t just provide the body with important proteins, but it can also help prevent the synthesis of other proteins that can cause infection and inflammation.
